Why “exact” matters
A decimal calculator turns 1/3 into 0.333… and leaves you to convert the answer back to something you can find on a tape. These work with the fractions themselves, so the answer is a fraction you can mark: 23 5/8 ÷ 6 is exactly 3 15/16. When a result has to be rounded, to the nearest 1/16 in or to the cent, it is labelled with “≈”.
