- Improper fraction

- Nearest 1/16
- 3 15/16
How it works
Each number is read as an exact fraction: 23 5/8 is 189/8, and a decimal such as 2.5 is 5/2, never a rounded binary number. The answer is reduced and shown as a mixed number, an improper fraction and a decimal.
The decimal and the nearest 1/16 are marked “≈” when they are rounded. Rounding goes to the nearest value, and an exact halfway point rounds away from zero.
Example: dividing a 23 5/8 in board into 6 equal parts gives 3 15/16 in each, exactly (63/16 = 3.9375).
