Printing a template at 100%.

An actual-size template is only useful if it prints at exactly the right size. These are the same checks printed on every BenchHand template.

Before you cut

  1. Print at 100% / Actual size

In the print dialog choose 100% or Actual size, and turn off Fit, Shrink and Scale-to-page. Print on the paper size the template was made for (US Letter or A4).

  2. Check the calibration square and both rulers

The first page has a 1 in calibration square, an inch ruler and a 100 mm ruler. Measure them with your own rule. If they measure wrong, the page was scaled: reprint at 100%. Don’t adjust the template by eye.

  3. Join the pages

Larger outlines run across more than one page. Trim only at the dashed trim lines, then line up the matching registration marks (the + marks) across the join. The page map on each page shows where it goes.

  4. Check every printed dimension

Measure the dimensions printed on the template, such as the long and short points of each member, against the plan before you use it.

Shop drawings are different: they are scaled to fit the page and marked not actual size. Work from their written dimensions, and never cut or measure from the drawing itself.
